A WEEK OF GIVEAWAYS!! UK National Vegetarian Week. Today A HUGE Box Of Hand Cooked Crisps from Ten Acre

It is all happening this week at A Vegan Obsession's HQ!  We are celebrating UK National Vegetarian Week everyday with great vegetarian/vegan goodies to GIVEAWAY!

You can win with Rebel Kitchen Ovivo Antioxidant Drink Tibits Love Raw (click on the links to enter).  ALL competitions are ending last thing on 26th May 2014.  We still have many more prizes coming up in the next few days.  So sign up for the newsletter to make sure you don't miss a trick!

I am super excited and a wee bit nostalgic about today's giveaway.  I have always been partial to a crisp.  Especially cheese and onion, which I would layer between slices of thickly buttered white bread or a crusty roll and then use both hands to press the crisps down to create a layer of cheesy, salty and very onion-y shards.  It was my sandwich of choice.  I'd add slabs of cheese too at times, or some chunky pickle.  But when I became vegan, all those moons ago I gave up this delicacy and got used to the idea that my days with cheese and onion crisps where to be placed in the vaults of time.  Can you imagine how I felt when I opened a bag of Ten Acre Crisps  (crisps where no dairy lurks) and crunched down?  It was like welcoming an old friend back into my arms!  Yes, a tear was shed. And, then I scoffed the whole bag and took all the flavours around to my friends to share and test the others.  This task was indeed happy making.  As I am sure this competition will be to one VERY LUCKY winner of a WHOLE box featuring bags of 8 flavours (there is even a How Chicken Soup Saved The Day flavour!).  Indulgence never tasted so good!

When Bombay Got Spicy
The Story Of When The Cheese Met The Onion
How Chicken Soup Saved The Day
The Amazing Adventures Of Salt & Vinegar
When Hickory Got BBQ'D
The Day Sweet & Sour Became Friends
 Secret Of Mr Salt
When The Chili Got Sweet

All these could be YOURS!  Trust me, these WILL win friends and influence people.

A Week Of Giveaways Celebrating National Vegetarian Week - Tibits At Home Cook Book

Day 2 of our celebration of UK National Vegetarian Week.  Thanks for joining us!   Did you enter yesterdays competition for Rebel Kitchen Mylks?  Great.

So today we have a cookbook to giveaway.  Everyone loves a cookbook and this book is true food porn.  Tibits is a modern vegetarian restaurant just off Regent Street in London.  I had the pleasure to review a dining experience there last year.   As with most good food hubs, beloved signature dishes develop and public demand for recipes grow.  So Tibits published a cookbook on their 10th anniversary called tibits At Home.  The hard backed book is seasonally compartmentalised, and full of beautiful photographs with simple recipes to try.  One of the staff told me that all the photos in the book were taken in the homes of regular diners in Switzerland.  Today, thanks to the generosity of tibits we have a copy to give away to one lucky winner!  It could be you.  Just enter below.

Good luck!!  Remember to sign up for our newsletter.  We are giving away prizes EVERYDAY this week!

Open to UK residents only.

A Campaign For Change Makers - URGENT DEADLINE LOOMS

We need you.  Time is ticking and a deadline is looming closer. We have just 13 days left.  Let's do this!

If I gave you a simple way to help animals, people (your family, friends) and the environment, AND make history you'd take it, right?!  Wherever you are in the world you can help.  All it may take is a 'click' or a 'share'.  Social media has the power to make huge positive, political change.  I can guarantee the next 3 minutes of your life are going to leave you with a self-satisfied, warm glow.  Please read on. You can say you were part of global change movement for our future generations.

Ok, so I've spent the last two days becoming acquainted with Vanessa Hudson, Leader of the Animal Welfare Party.  The UK arm of a pan-European political party, who are contesting in the May 2014 EU Parliament elections with the aim of returning dedicated representatives for animals to the EU Parliament for the first time in history.   You can read about it more in their manifesto statement.  I interviewed Vanessa…twice. Due to technical issues, I also became VERY acquainted with Apple Support, who try as they might, weren't able to furnish you the interview with audio (right, major flaw).  If you can lip read.  You're in business!  Go watch a snippet of interview below!

So, because of this (and much to my chagrin), I am forced to summarise….

Basically Vanessa says of the AWP;

" We think this is as significant as any moment in the history of women’s rights or human rights. We believe that only by having elected representatives in the EU Parliament can the interests of animals begin to be properly protected. “

How will helping the animals address issues that are effecting us all, world-wide right now?   Take a look at the AWP Indiegogo campaign.

The Animal Welfare Party mission statement states they are a party for the people, animals and the environment.   How can the action of the AWP help?

  • Promoting healthy plant based diets - helps us ALL on many levels.                     PEOPLE
  • Redirecting subsides from livestock to plant-based agriculture will reduce environmental pollution and make MORE land available.             ENVIRONMENT
  • Improving welfare for ALL animals will undoubtedly make the world a more compassionate place.  We are in an era of change and shifting of perspectives.  This is the chance for us to give voice to the animals.  All of us would want to end the suffering of animals.       ANIMALS

Please consider forgoing not even the price of a cup of coffee…. £1 or $1 (or more, PERKS offered) to help the campaign get the funding it needs to be elected in May 2014.. THANK YOU.   If you can only SHARE this campaign on Facebook or Twitter.  THANK YOU.

We all want change.
This is part of that change.
Together we can make a BIG Difference.       Please help!

We have just until 31st December to raise the funds needed to back the campaign. It is vital we bond together now to act.

Thank YOU!

Surely A 'Must Do' When In New York. Go Visit A Chocolate Factory [video clip]

Not all chocolates are created equal.  Not all raw chocolates cut the mustard so to speak.  Fine & Raw does.

Tell you about Fine & Raw?  OK.

"FINE & RAW was started in a notorious Williamsburg, Brooklyn artist loft by Daniel Sklaar. A nonsensical obsession with chocolate inspired Daniel to begin making small chocolate batches. He shared them with friends then started delivering them on his bicycle to small local purveyors. The stock was good - the purveyors wanted more"

The first slip of a morsel of F&R into my mouth occurred at the Williamsburg Brooklyn Flea foodie market named Smorgasburg (see what they did?!).  Here I sampled a few morsels and became rather partial to their Sea Salt Chunky bar. I declare it is rich dark chocolate heaven with the perfect amount of sea salt to offset the subtle sweetness that lets the cacao shine. I loved it so much I tracked down the factory to the uber trendy Brooklyn district of Bushwick.   The smell inside was insane.  I inhaled so much and so deeply I nearly had to grab one of their brown paper bags to stop me hyperventilating!

If you are in Brooklyn I strongly suggest you get yourself over to the Fine & Raw HQ and meet these bean to bar makers. It is a fun thing to do and there are a few vegan cafes and even a vegan bar just around the corner. Brooklyn has a very different feel to Manhattan and Bushwick and nearby Williamsburg are a great place to shop, eat and hang out.  Check out the graffiti around there, too.

Back to Fine & Raw...They source their beans from small sustainable farmers in countries like Columbia and Madagascar.  They have a little cafe area where you can sip a hot drink, eat far too much chocolate (you can sample their amazing flavours of 'bonbon' 'lucuma & vanilla' and 'blueberry' 'chipotle' and even one with cacao nibs in, to name but a few), and watch the chocolate making shenanigans unfold before your eyes.

What makes this chocolate 'raw'?  Well, it means it is not heated above a certain temperature and so it mains it's flavour profile and maintains it's nutrients.

Making History. Animal Welfare Party Set Their Sights On A Seat In EU Parliament

This is an exciting opportunity for your chance to be part of helping to get a devoted animal lover, and campaigner, Vanessa Hudson, get into the EU Parliament.  Please join us in supporting the www.animalwelfareparty.org.

We need around 140,000 votes in London (our target constituency) in order for the Animal Welfare Party to win a seat. We know they can do it because estimates tell us there are around half a million members of the electorate in London following some kind of vegetarian diet – and therefore likely to be warm to our policies. That's three times enough people to vote them into that seat and make history for the animals!

Click below to find out more about the crowd funding project they have launched to get the funds they need to make this happen.  Be part of making history!

Party Time! World Vegan Day Party London & Day Of The Dead Celebrations

If you don't already know, November 1st is World Vegan Day, and the start to World Vegan Month.  It is a great opportunity for the already vegan and the vegan curious to gather and have some fun.  The London Vegan Meetup Group are going to gather in London.  Not in London?  Events are happening all over, not just in the UK.  A Google search will list those closest to you.
If you have a great event you want us to know about, leave a comment below or on the Facebook  page.

Are you going?  I can't make either of them. I will be in New York (woohoo!).  Have fun!

The Great Vegan Challenge

For all you would-be vegans out there, here’s the perfect opportunity to take the plunge and give the plant-based diet a go.

This November, Animal Aid is running the Great Vegan Challenge and the idea behind it is simple: you pledge to go vegan for the month and they aim to make it as easy, fun and engaging as possible. Plus it’s free to sign up and open to anyone, anywhere in the world!

When you register to take part, you’ll get:
  • Advice on nutrition and vegan products
  • Recipes and motivational tips sent regularly
  • Access to an internet forum for swapping tips and stories
  • A telephone hotline for any burning questions
  • Information on exclusive events, offers and product give-aways

Almost 800 people took part last year from 17 different countries and the response from them was overwhelmingly positive.  Let's help make it 8000 this year!

Here is what some of last years participants had to say...

‘So glad I gave the Great Vegan Challenge a go! It’s been fantastic and made a big change in my lifestyle for the better! Everyone should try it!’ – Katrina Powis

‘Fantastic! I didn’t realise it would be as easy as it was to transition from veggie to vegan. I will certainly be staying vegan… no going back now!’ – Shaune Mather

‘The Vegan Challenge gave me invaluable knowledge, as well as the support and ease to continue on this path in future.’ – Nadya Booyse

You can read more about people’s experiences last year on the Great Vegan Challenge blog (www.govegan.org.uk/category/blog/) which will be updated daily throughout November.

This year, Animal Aid has also linked up with organisations in Australia (veganeasy.org), Canada (www.MercyForAnimals.ca), Luxembourg (http://www.vegansociety.lu/portal), Estonia (http://www.taimetoidumess.ee/index.php?lang=en) and elsewhere (http://www.govegan.org.uk/register/support-for-vegan-challengers-outside-the-uk/) to help spread the word and support Vegan Challengers in those countries, making it a truly global event.

If you’re already vegan, why not convince one of your friends or family to give it a try? You never know, they might just come round to the vegan way. Going vegan isn't just about saving animals, it may also saving theirs.

Whether you’re motivated by saving animals, improving your health or protecting the planet, you can find out more about the Great Vegan Challenge or sign-up to take part at www.govegan.org.uk and if you have any questions, you can contact Ben Martin via veganchallenge@animalaid.co.uk or by calling 01732 364546 ext 227.

Good luck.  Let us know how you get on.  Leave a comment, tell us all about it.
